Dealing With Pregnancy Discomfort?
Just this morning you looked down and noticed that your belly is protruding beyond your feet. Your posture continues to change with the added strain of the beautiful child growing inside you. But, its coming at a cost because there’s swelling, back pain and tension that you’ve never experienced before. And, now you begin to question yourself, “do I have to feel this uncomfortable for 9 months?”
How Chiropractic Can Help Pregnancy Pain
During pregnancy, your body will go through several physical and hormonal changes in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. The following changes could result in misalignments of the spine:
- Protruding abdomen
- Increase back curve and strain
- Pelvic changes
- Neck and shoulder postural adaptations
When the pelvis misaligns it may reduce the amount of room available for the baby to develop. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. Additionally, a misaligned pelvis may make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible potions during the delivery process and may affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth.
It can be considered normal to the baby to present breech until the third trimester, but breech positions beyond the 37 weeks increase concerns for practitioners. Breech and posterior positions can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as C-sections.
Webster Technique for balancing the Pelvis
Larry Webster, D.C. developed a specific analysis and adjustment protocol which enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant woman’s’ pelvis. This technique reduces undue stress on the uterus and supporting ligaments. As a result the balanced pelvis has been shown clinically to allow for optimal fetal positioning. The technique is named after the developer, Webster Technique.
Dr. Geoff Huls at Vitality Chiropractic in Tucson, Arizona is certified in Webster Technique and has experience using Webster on women caring both singletons and multiples. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) recommends that women receive chiropractic care through pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and to allow optimal space for the baby to develop throughout pregnancy. Optimizing the baby’s position may also eliminate the potential for dystocia (difficult labor) and therefore, result in an easier and safer delivery for the mother and baby.
