Pregnancy Benefits from Chiropractic Care

Pregnancy is a exciting time full of amazing transformations! Through chiropractic care, we aim to help optimize your pregnancy as your body changes.

What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is a non-surgical and drug-less healthcare profession that helps your body’s ability to heal itself naturally. The central theory of chiropractic is that misalignments in the spine called subluxations can cause interference to the function of the nervous system. Chiropractors therefor make adjustments to the spine in order to improve motion and remove interference to the nervous system. These adjustments result in reduced pain, improved function and overall health.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

There is a multitude of reasons patients seek chiropractic care. Obviously, patients do not schedule an appointment complaining of nerve interference. Instead, patients may have a nagging chronic pain. They may have been injured in an automobile accident or maybe they are seeking help with back pain & a breech pregnancy.  Patients may not have any pain and still seek chiropractic care to reduce stiffness and fatigue. By taking care of your spine you are taking care of your nervous system. In many cases patients may seek chiropractic care for one complaint like back pain but find other improvements beyond reduced back pain like improved sleep and mood. Here are some common benefits to chiropractic care:

1.      Natural Pain Relief

If your spine is not moving appropriately it can cause excessive pulling or pinching of the soft tissues. Identifying misalignments (subluxations) and correcting them with an adjustment may provide almost immediate relief.

2.      Improved Motion

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to create brain based (nervous system) changes that relax muscles. This along with other positive changes associated with a chiropractic adjustment decrease joint stiffness and improve joint motion.

3.      Helps the Body to Function Optimally

Optimal Function may be third on the list, but it is the primary goal of chiropractic care. Pain is the primary reason patients seek care but feeling good and functioning optimally is the most common reason patients continue chiropractic care long after their pains go away. The value of regular chiropractic care and an optimally functioning nervous system is unmeasurable!

Working with Pregnant Women

Pregnancy causes an amazing transformation to a woman’s body. As her baby grows, hormones are released causing ligaments to become more elastic and stretchy. This is important because it allows for the obvious posture changes. And, its also why the goals in a chiropractic practice may change. In order to accommodate the posture changes chiropractors use pregnancy pillows to support pregnant women. These pregnancy pillows allow chiropractors to have direct access to the spine while pregnant women lay face down on chiropractic tables. Techniques used for pregnant women are typically considered gentle. Chiropractors seeking to see more pregnant women commonly get certified in a technique called Webster technique.

Working with a Breech Pregnancy

Webster technique is a chiropractic technique developed specifically to analyze and adjust a pregnant women’s pelvis. Pelvic misalignments may cause uterine “torsion” which may force a baby into an abnormal position. Research on breech pregnancies have shown Webster technique as an effective way to allow breech presentations to normalize in the head-down position. It is important to point out chiropractors do not treat breech pregnancies. Chiropractors adjust pelvic misalignments which may be causing intrauterine constraint.

Dr. Geoff Huls is certified in Webster Technique and has experience with singleton and multiples.
